East Screen / West Screen #42 – Japantagonists

Running Time (1:38:12)

Apologies for the hiatus over the past few weeks.  What had been planned as a one week by-week instead became a three week span due to an illness, a vacation, and the start of the new semester.  This week we managed to pull webmaster Kozo back in to share his thoughts on the recent Donnie Yen film and to talk about whatever else was on his mind.

ES News:

  1. Echoes of the Rainbow and Aftershock head to Oscars. (FilmBiz Asia)
  2. Hawthorn Tree gets a lukewarm opening. (FilmBiz Asia)
  3. Hot Summer Days goes to Fox. (FilmBiz Asia)

EAST SCREEN:

LEGEND OF THE FIST: THE RETURN OF CHEN ZHEN [精武風雲-陳真] (Hong Kong 2010)

  • LotF:RoCZ was disappointing in most areas.  While it utilizes the titular character of Fist of Fury [ 精武門 ](a.k.a. The Chinese Connection) and Fist of Legend [ 精武英雄 ] and numerous other films, this is not much of a sequel to any of them.  This is because it plays loose and light with both the continuity of the character and historic facts. Interestingly, I was only recently made aware of the fact that this is not Donnie’s first crack at the role.

WS News:

  1. The $30 Home Movie (Bloomberg)
  2. David Tennat in new Fright Night remake (Parallel Universe)
  3. Sylvester McCoy to star in Hobbit (Parallel Universe)
  4. Hobbit leaves NZ (Parallel Universe)
  5. Star Wars to get 3D release

Intermission – RESIDENT EVIL SUITE by Tomaandandy (iTunes Link)

WEST SCREEN:

RESIDENT EVIL: AFTERLIFE (US 2010)

  • Not much to say about Resident Evil 4 (or Biohazard 4 for some).  If you have stuck with the series this far you are likely going to enjoy this entry.  It’s simply more of the same, only slower, fancier, and in 3D.  If  you are jumping in for the first time here, you are likely to be lost though…can we ‘fan service’…I think we can.

NEXT TIME:

DETECTIVE DEE AND THE PHANTOM FLAME [狄仁傑之通天帝國]

  1. Welcome back guys 🙂

A Donnie Yen orgy? That’s a mental image I could have done without! 🙁

I’m with Kevin on Initial D – watched it once and that was more than enough!

I LOVE Beast Cops (the scenes with the two Wongs & Sam Lee are the best) 😀

The Star Wars blu rays are going to be the 90’s fiddled with versions rather than the original theatrical versions – boo! 🙁

  2. In other words, you guys just repeated what I said about “Legend of the Fist” over 3 weeks ago. Only with a little more elaboration. I warned you about it…

In other news, I heard Edison Chen was in talks with the original cast and crew of “Initial D” for a possible sequel.
